Most general dentists will prepare a tooth to receive the veneer, take an impression, and send the impression to a dental laboratory. The veneer is processed and eventually bonded to the patent’s tooth. There is no aesthetic understanding, communication with the laboratory technician, or understanding the products used to fabricate the veneer. The result is a monochromatic piece of porcelain that is bonded to the tooth. Teeth are not one color. They have reds, blues, yellows–essentially every color in the rainbow. A natural tooth is prismatic–radiating different colors. Color selection is not only dependent on the adjacent teeth but also the color of the prepared tooth upon which the veneer will eventually be bonded. It takes a complete understanding of the opaquers, tints, and bonding agents,to create a natural looking translucent tooth.

The difference? We start with an in depth consultation to acquire an understanding of goals and expectations. Our laboratory technician lectures throughout the world on how to layer porcelain to create veneers that radiate color. As with a painter, the color is applied deep within the porcelain and blended with multiple layers of descending colors and translucency. Once the teeth have been prepared and temporaries placed, our laboratory technician is involved with shade selection, tooth morphology, and smile design. We communicate our initial goals and the final results usually exceed the patient’s expectations.

PERIODONTAL DISEASE CAN LEAD TO CORONARY HEART DISEASE

Periodontal disease (periodontitis) occurs when inflammation or infection of the gums (gingivitis) is untreated or treatment is delayed. The infection spreads from the gums to the ligaments and bone that support the teeth. The loss of support eventually causes the teeth to become loose.

Plaque and calculus accumulate in the sulcus (the pocket area that surrounds the teeth). Soft tissue swelling traps the plaque in the pocket. Continued inflammation eventually caused destruction of the tissues and bone surrounding the teeth resulting in deeper pockets.

Patients with periodontitis have a 25% increased risk of coronary heart disease. Poor oral hygiene, determined by the extent of dental debris and calculus, was also associated with an increased incidence or coronary heart disease.

Pocket measurement of 3-4 mm are considered normal and considered to be gingivitis which is reversible. When the pocket measurements rise the disease becomes irreversible. Treatment involves the use of various instruments to loosen and remove deposits from the teeth and the gingival pocket lining. This procedure is called root planing and curettage. The goal is to make the roots of the teeth smooth to eliminate the plaque from sticking to the teeth and to cause new tissue cells to form. If you have additional questions about periodontal deisease, please contact Dr. Boling to acquire more information or to schedule a consultation.
